What is VIPKid?
I may not be a teacher for my day job but I teach as a side hustle with VIPKid and I LOVE IT! Plus, a little extra cash never hurt anyone! Did I mention it can all be done from home?! Being a military family, regularly moving makes it tough to have a consistent job…until now!
What is VIPKid? Short answer: working from home (or wherever you may be) teaching English to students in China. Sounds intimidating but most kids are already learning English in school, we’re there to give them one-on-one coaching for extra practice and help with pronunciation. Pay is $14-23 an hour. All of the curriculum is done; you review the (already prepared) slides and have a few props nearby before hand (the Dollar Store or Steplo Props are the perfect place to look). You teach one-on-one for 25-28 minute classes. During the school year, peak hours in the Central time zone are 5-830am weekdays with evening slots at 7pm-8am and Friday 8pm – Saturday 830am. Saturday evenings from 8pm – Sunday morning at 8. There are several other spots available but these book the fastest.
I teach about 18-25 hours a week, depending on my schedule. The best part, you can pick up and teach anywhere or not teach whenever you want! Making an account is simple and quick, click this link to sign up with me as as your coach!
HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?
Basic Info -> Demo Lesson -> Mock Class -> Sign Contract
BASIC INFO:
This consists of the basics; Name, location, experience with kids (they prefer 1+ yrs). You must have a Bachelor’s degree (but it does NOT need to be in education, YAY!) When you submit this, you may be asked if you want to book a demo / interview time slot. I suggest clicking “I prefer to read the preparation materials before booking.”
DEMO:
This is the interview. Once you pass this point, you CANNOT fail! You have 3 options on how you want to “interview”. This is where you will teach prepared slides to the interviewer who is pretending to be the student.
- Option 1: The Live Interview: This option is 5 minutes. You will teach ‘He is sad’ demo slides to the interviewer (who is pretending to be the student).
- Option 2: The Recorded Demo: Log into the online portal, give some background about yourself (where you live, hobbies you like, etc.) then teach the ‘He is sad’ slides (5 minutes) to an imaginary kid.
- Option 3: The NEW Smart Demo Lesson: This version is fast and easy. Add the VIPKid app to your phone, answer 5 questions and record yourself teaching one slide (2 minutes). This is the option I chose, it was so simple!
Once you submit your demo, you’ll hear back within 24hrs if you’ve passed or not.
MOCK CLASS:
You’re in! Once you pass your demo lesson you’ll move on to your Mock Class. Think of this as practice lessons before you teach students; the VIPKid teacher will give you tips at the end of your mock class to help you get comfortable with the materials and teaching online.
What is the Mock Class? It is a 10 minute class you teach to an already-hired VIPKid teacher. (You get the slides beforehand so you know exactly what you’re teaching!) VIPKid suggests you submit your mock within 3 days but you can take as much time as you need to practice. I took 6 days to practice and sent several videos to my mom for tips! You can do your mock class right away because if you fail, you just try again!
SIGN YOUR CONTRACT:
Sign your contract and upload your documents (degree certificate, ID, etc.), photos, short intro video and bio. FYI – They will also do a background check.
– Here is where you upload your certifications if you have them.
