Hiking Heather Lake

One of my favorite hikes in Washington, Heather Lake is a rewarding hike that has several spots to picnic and take amazing pictures with the crystal clear water.

Don't forget to check the weather and pack enough snacks and water - Check out my Hiking Checklist here to be sure you're prepared for this hike.

Distance: 5.5 miles
Price: Northwest Forest Pass or $5/day
Dog friendly: Yes
Difficulty: Moderate

Located near Granite Falls, WA, this trail is relatively short with a few steep moments, but it's definitely a hike where you could bring the kids along! Make sure to have an AWD or 4WD vehicle or you will not be able to make it to the trailhead, there are potholes larger than 6ft wide!

The lake itself is a scenic little lake located on the northeastern slope of Mount Pilchuck.

As you begin the trail, there is an immediate steep incline of switchbacks through a large, overgrown forest with huge stumps from years of logging.

You'll pass an old logging road leading you to a short, rocky section that can be super slippery when wet. As you continue to walk, you'll reach a clearing where the trail will begin to level out for 1/4 of a mile then you'll begin to see the lake.

Before you get to the lake, there will be a fork in the trail that will take you around the lake, adding 1/2 mile, so you can go either way. If you go left, you will come to a large clearing where you can stop for a snack or picnic. I definitely recommend continuing around the lake to see several different types of landscapes and views of Mount Pilchuck.

Tips:

This is a very popular hike on sunny weekends. If you can, visit midweek, pack breakfast and a thermos of coffee, get there before nine, and have the lake to yourself.

It will take a little under 3 hours to complete so be sure to get there early to beat the crowds and have snacks and enough water.

The best time to hike Heather Lake is between May and November - be sure to check the weather to see if you need crampons or snowshoes. Don't forget to grab your Northwest Forest Pass or a $5/day pass
